Dhaka: President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has underscored the necessity for heightened awareness among farmers and stakeholders to mitigate the excessive and indiscriminate use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides in agriculture. He emphasized that such practices are causing significant and lasting damage to soil health, the environment, and public health during a meeting with a delegation from Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University at Bangabhaban.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the President's Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam provided a briefing to reporters following the meeting. President Fakhrul urged agricultural universities and relevant institutions to collaborate effectively to educate farmers on the detrimental impacts of the overuse of chemical fertilisers and pesticides.
In the discussions, President Fakhrul highlighted the importance of applying research-based technologies at the field level, producing safe food, and adopting environmentally friendly agricultural practices to establish a sustainable and modern agricultural system. He also emphasized the need for close coordination among agricultural education, research, and extension activities.
The delegation, led by Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Abdul Latif, updated the President on the university's overall activities. Secretaries to the President's Office were also present during the meeting.
