Dhaka:President and Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University (BOU) Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged for the expansion and modernization of the university's distance learning programs to better serve learners outside the traditional education system.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the President's comments came during a meeting with a five-member delegation from BOU, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan, at Bangabhaban. The President's Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam provided details following the meeting.
During their discussion, the Vice-Chancellor congratulated Mirza Fakhrul on his new position as President and briefed him on BOU's current operations, including its academic offerings for approximately 350,000 students, and the university's media centre, academic schools, study centres, and both overseas and regional educational activities.
Dr Siddiqur also requested the President's support in modernizing the university. President Fakhrul acknowledged BOU's significant role in offering educational opportunities to marginalized groups, including working individuals, homemakers, school dropouts, and people in remote areas.
The Vice-Chancellor invited the President to the university's convocation next year, an invitation which President Fakhrul accepted, promising his cooperation for the university's development and enhancement of educational quality. Senior officials and secretaries to the President were also present at the meeting.
