Dhaka: President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus emphasized the importance of integrating individuals with disabilities into the mainstream of society during separate messages issued to mark the 33rd International Day of Persons with Disabilities and the 26th National Day of Persons with Disabilities. They highlighted the need for collective efforts to improve the quality of life for disabled individuals through employment, self-reliance, and a supportive environment. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, both leaders expressed their commitment to fostering a non-discriminatory social system. President Shahabuddin conveyed his belief that the successful implementation of inclusive plans would significantly contribute to the development of disabled individuals. He urged government and private organizations, as well as civil society, to take active steps toward creating a disability-friendly society and ensuring mental and social development for people with disabilities. Pr of Yunus reinforced the President's message by addressing the concerns of parents with disabled children and urging both government and private sectors to support the development of these individuals. He expressed optimism that concerted efforts could help integrate children with autism and neurodevelopmental disorders into mainstream national life. The leaders applauded the Ministry of Social Welfare's initiatives to celebrate these significant days, extending heartfelt congratulations to all individuals with disabilities and the organizations working for their welfare. They acknowledged the integral role people with disabilities play in society and stressed that sustainable development cannot be achieved without their inclusion. Prof Yunus highlighted the Ministry's ongoing activities, including providing free services and assistive devices, operating specialized schools, and establishing facilities for education and rehabilitation. A notable development is the multi-purpose disabled complex in Dhaka's M irpur area, which offers comprehensive support for children and individuals with various disabilities. Bangladesh's commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of people with disabilities is underscored by its ratification of the UN Charter on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2006 and the formulation of related national legislation. This year's theme, "Inclusive sustainable development, people with disabilities will move forward with developed leadership," reflects the country's dedication to empowering individuals with disabilities as leaders in sustainable development.
