London: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today indicated that the upcoming general elections could potentially be scheduled for the week preceding the holy month of Ramadan in February 2026, provided that all necessary preparations are completed.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, this announcement came during a meeting between Chief Adviser Yunus and BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman at a hotel in London. The meeting was described as cordial, as stated in a joint statement released by both the Chief Adviser and the acting BNP Chairman post-discussion.

During the meeting, Tarique Rahman proposed that the elections be conducted before the onset of Ramadan. The joint statement further mentioned that BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia also supports the timing of the elections occurring during this period.

Professor Yunus reiterated his earlier announcement that the polls were initially planned for the first half of April 2026. However, he noted that if preparations are expedited, the elections might occur in the week leading up to Ramadan, contingent upon achieving significant progress on necessary reforms and trials.

The proposal was warmly received by Tarique Rahman, who expressed gratitude to the Chief Adviser on behalf of his party. Professor Yunus reciprocated with thanks for the productive dialogue.
