Dhaka: National Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Professor Ali Riaz emphasized the transformative potential of politicians' commitment to press freedom during a view exchange meeting at the Daily Star Bhaban. Riaz stated that such a commitment would represent a significant reform in the current media landscape.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Ali Riaz criticized the political use of journalism to maintain a fascist government over the past sixteen years. He argued that genuine independence and professionalism in journalism cannot be achieved under the current media ownership structures. Riaz challenged attendees to decide whether they aim to serve as mere shopkeepers or fulfill the role of the fourth estate.
Professor Riaz further elaborated that a political commitment to press freedom could surpass the importance of a mere signature on the national consensus commission document by political parties. He highlighted that the reform of mass media would need to prioritize press freedom and the establishment of a true fourth estate, considering both institutional and professional aspects.
Riaz also urged journalists' unions to advocate for the professional security of media employees rather than relying on governmental action. This call to action underscores the need for media workers to be proactive in seeking reforms that ensure their professional integrity and freedom.
