Dhaka: Leaders of different political parties have expressed deep condolences over the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. Begum Khaleda Zia, widely regarded as an uncompromising leader for democracy in Bangladesh, died this morning at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment at a city hospital.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir shared his sorrow in a Facebook post, expressing profound grief over the loss of their chairperson. Similarly, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman expressed deep shock and sorrow, acknowledging her significant contributions to Bangladesh’s democratic movement and struggle.
Dr Rahman highlighted Khaleda Zia’s pivotal role in the restoration of multi-party democracy and the movement against dictatorship, which he stated will be remembered in history. He emphasized her unique identity in the political arena for her strong leadership and firm political stance, and expressed his condolences to her family and colleagues, praying for her eternal peace.
National Citizens Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam also expressed condolences on Facebook, recognizing her courageous leadership during the anti-dictatorship movement and her role in establishing a parliamentary system of government in Bangladesh. Nahid praised her enduring political ideology and dedication to the people’s rights throughout her long political career.
Zonayed Saki, Chief Coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolon, and Bangladesh Labour Party chairman Dr Mustafizur Rahman Iran also expressed shock and sorrow in their messages. They conveyed sympathy to Khaleda Zia’s family and followers, seeking eternal peace for her departed soul.
Janata Party Bangladesh (JPB) also joined in expressing deep shock at her demise. JPB acting chairman Golam Sarwar Milon and acting secretary general Md Asaduzzaman conveyed their deep sympathy to the bereaved family and well-wishers, seeking eternal peace for her soul.
