Dhaka: Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasized the importance of resolving political crises through parliamentary dialogue with the opposition. Speaking at a discussion organized by the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) at the National Press Club, Fakhrul highlighted the government's willingness to collaborate with the opposition to address political challenges, including the implementation of the July Charter.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Fakhrul, who also serves as the BNP Secretary General, criticized the opposition for seemingly aligning with the Awami League's rhetoric. He stressed the need for the opposition to play a robust role in ensuring the effective functioning of democracy. Addressing the second anniversary of the July Mass Uprising, Fakhrul recalled the sacrifices made by many, including the late former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, in the pursuit of democracy. He noted that the BNP, as a liberal democratic party, respects the contributions of all political parties.
Fakhrul alleged that 125,000 false cases have been filed against BNP leaders and activists, with many detained without trial and some subjected to enforced disappearances and killings. He pointed out that Begum Khaleda Zia faced imprisonment on false charges, while the current Prime Minister was in exile for 18 years. Fakhrul stated that the struggle for democracy achieved its ultimate victory in July 2024, leading to the ousting of fascist Hasina from power and enabling a democratic government election.
Reaffirming BNP's commitment to the July Charter, Fakhrul mentioned that the opposition's proposals for constitutional amendments would be debated in parliament. He denied allegations that the BNP was spreading falsehoods regarding the July Charter's implementation, asserting the party's role in reforms and restoration of state institutions. Fakhrul highlighted BNP's achievements, such as introducing the caretaker government system and promoting a free-market economy, and emphasized the need to rebuild the country by addressing the damaged economy.
Fakhrul addressed the ongoing debate over a referendum, explaining that BNP had reached an agreement on three constitutional reform issues, with a single proposal causing differences. He assured that discussions and amendments regarding the July Charter were underway in parliament. Urging dialogue with the opposition, Fakhrul called for a collaborative approach to finding solutions within the parliamentary framework.
He appealed to opposition parties to allow the government time to fulfill its commitments, noting that it had only been a few months since the new administration took office. The discussion was attended by various media personalities and journalist organization leaders, with BFUJ President Obaidur Rahman Shaheen delivering the welcome address and BFUJ Secretary General Kader Gani Chowdhury presenting the keynote paper.
