Police’s Role Paramount for Free, Fair and Impartial Election: Home Adviser

Dhaka: Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today emphasized the crucial role of the police in ensuring that the upcoming parliamentary elections are conducted in a free, fair, and neutral manner: Speaking as the chief guest at a crime review meeting held at the ‘Hall of Pride’ conference room in the Police Headquarters, he highlighted the expectation for the police to set a standard that will be lauded both nationally and internationally.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Home Adviser assured that both the government and the police are putting forth every effort to ensure an exemplary election process. He stressed the importance of enforcing the law with justice, integrity, and humanity, underscoring the police’s dual role as protectors of law and order and symbols of security and democratic rights for the populace.



The Home Adviser also addressed ongoing political dialogues concerning the elections and urged the police not to show favoritism toward any political party. He called for vigilance against any subversive acts aimed at disrupting law and order, emphasizing that no innocent individuals should be harassed.



In his call to senior police officers, Jahangir emphasized enhancing professionalism, team spirit, discipline, and morale among subordinate officers and troops. He advocated for strict administrative and legal measures against those lacking professionalism or showing disrespect toward the government and state. He also recommended frequent core committee meetings at the district level and the swift resolution of political harassment and false cases.



Jahangir urged increased activity from the Special Branch of the Police and expedited operations to recover looted, lost, or illegal weapons. He highlighted the need for strengthened security for Key Point Installations (KPIs) and vigilance against increasing incidents like fires.



The Adviser firmly stated that attacks on police forces would not be tolerated and called for immediate legal action in such instances. With the rise of cyber crimes, he urged young police officers to take a leading role in prevention efforts.



The meeting, chaired by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam, also saw the adviser addressing questions from DIGs of various ranges, Metropolitan Police Commissioners, and District Police Superintendents, providing them with necessary guidance.
