Dhaka: Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury announced today that the Bangladesh Police, except for the Armed Police Battalion (APBn), will not have the authority to use lethal weapons. This decision marks a significant shift in the operational protocols of the country's police force.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Home Adviser disclosed this new policy following the 9th meeting of the advisory committee on law and order, held at the ministry's conference room at the secretariat. The decision reflects a strategic move to regulate the use of force by law enforcement agencies in Bangladesh.
In response to inquiries about the implementation timeline, the Home Adviser stated, "We have just made the decision. It will take time." This indicates that while the decision is firm, its execution will require careful planning and a phased approach.
Additionally, a committee has been established to oversee the implementation and examine other pertinent issues. This committee is led by Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser on Home Affairs Md.
