Dhaka: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced that the police force will revert to their traditional blue tops and khaki trousers as their uniform. This announcement was made during a press briefing at his office following the first meeting of the national committee responsible for coordinating activities related to the forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting concentrated on maintaining law and order in the refugee camps and enhancing camp management. It also discussed the roles, leadership, and discipline of the joint forces operating within these camps. The minister clarified that passport issuance for Rohingyas in Saudi Arabia was not part of the discussions.
Addressing public concerns about law and order in the Rohingya camps, the minister assured that the government is actively working to control the situation. He also acknowledged allegations that high-profile criminals released on bail are engaging in criminal activities, stating that investigations are underway and legal actions will follow based on evidence.
The minister highlighted the ongoing nationwide special anti-drug operation initiated on May 1, aimed at arresting major drug traders, traffickers, and suppliers to dismantle the network. The focus is on major players rather than drug users.
On the topic of police uniforms, the minister revealed that the government is reconsidering the current police attire due to dissatisfaction within the force. The decision to return to the classic blue top and khaki trousers was made after discussions with the police, and implementation is expected soon.
In response to an incident in Cumilla, where BNP activists attempted to seize a police station to release their leaders, the minister categorized it as a political matter, emphasizing that law enforcement agencies are managing the situation.
The minister also addressed routine administrative processes such as transfers, promotions, and retirements within the police administration, asserting that these follow established rules and any allegations are reviewed departmentally.
Lastly, he dismissed opposition criticisms of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad’s first session, describing it as a successful and vibrant parliamentary session, with numerous laws passed and cordial discussions between the government and opposition. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing challenges and restoring stability in the country.
