Dhaka:Law enforcement agencies suspect that third party instigation is behind the ongoing unrest in the readymade garments (RMG) sector across various parts of the country. The unrest emerged as workers demanded a minimum wage of Taka 30,000.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, some RMG workers continue to demonstrate despite the government's formation of a minimum wage board to address the workers' demands. Industrial Police Chief and Additional Inspector General of Police, Gazi Jashim Uddin, indicated that third party instigation might be fueling the labor unrest.
Gazi Jashim Uddin noted that even though a minimum wage board has been established, some workers continue to protest with alleged mala-fide intentions. He stated that the police had repeatedly attempted to calm the workers by informing them of the government's efforts to announce the wage board.
Despite these efforts, some workers have engaged in violent demonstrations, particularly in Dhaka, Gazipur, and Tangail, which the police chief suggests indicates third party involvement. The unrest has included incidents such as the burning of a police vehicle in Pallabi and injuries to three police personnel during protests in Gazipur.
The Industrial Police Chief further mentioned that law enforcement has exercised maximum patience and minimal force in managing the protests, aiming to protect both the factories and the workers involved.
