Dhaka: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam today emphasized that the police force cannot be seen as a killer entity and should only be equipped with shotguns for the purpose of maintaining law and order.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the IGP made these remarks while distributing prizes at the IGP Cup Cricket Championship 2024-25, held at the Police Cricket Club ground at the Police Staff College in Mirpur. Alam reiterated that the police force should avoid using firearms, as bullets from rifles can be lethal.
Alam further stated that police should rely on non-lethal weapons to manage public order, aligning with global practices. A decision on this matter will be made following consultations with various stakeholders.
In the cricket championship, the Industrial Police team emerged victorious, defeating the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) by two wickets in the final match played in the T20 format.
