Dhaka: Police have arrested four members of an alleged kidnapping gang in connection with the abduction of Arfan Sayeed, son of an Information Ministry official.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the arrests were made following instructions from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman after the matter was brought to his attention. The individuals apprehended have been identified as Tanvir Ahmed alias Fahim, 23, Ishraq Yamin Likhon, 20, Hasan Al Banna alias Haslam, 21, and Mostafiz Rahman Punj, 22.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Ramna Division Masud Alam described the group as an organised gang that targeted young people through social media. The suspects allegedly used drugs and women to lure victims before kidnapping them for ransom. In this case, the suspects reportedly contacted the teenager via social media, took him to the Chamelibagh area of Khilgaon, and demanded ransom over the phone.
Police reported that the victim’s father informed the Prime Minister about the incident, prompting immediate action from the Ramna Division DC. DC Masud stated that the kidnappers held the teenager in an under-construction building in Chamelibagh. Police used information technology to trace the location. However, the suspects fled upon sensing police presence, leaving the victim behind.
The teenager was subsequently rescued, provided with first aid at a private hospital, and reunited with his family. Police are currently searching for another suspect believed to be involved in the crime. A case has been filed with Ramna Police Station, and further operations are ongoing.
