Dhaka: Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman announced today that the Tanu murder case, which had been stagnant for a decade, is finally advancing, thanks to an initiative by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The minister stated that a significant breakthrough has been achieved, with one suspect already in custody.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Prime Minister expressed his concern on Eid by reaching out to the minister to inquire about the investigation's status. Subsequently, he provided detailed information that has propelled the case forward after a prolonged period of inactivity. Asaduzzaman shared these developments during a press briefing at a consultative meeting at the BRAC Center in Mohakhali, organized by BRAC's Social Empowerment and Legal Protection (SELP) programme.
The minister assured that all individuals involved in the case will eventually face justice. Discussions regarding the case were held with the Prime Minister immediately following Eid, emphasizing the Prime Minister's vested interest. The case is currently under the purview of the Ministry of Home Affairs, with continued efforts from the law ministry to facilitate progress.
Addressing further inquiries, Asaduzzaman mentioned that several pending tasks related to the case are now prioritized for swift completion under the Prime Minister's directives, aiming for completion within one to two months.
The meeting also served as the platform for the release of a joint research report by the Bangladesh Supreme Court and BRAC, examining procedural barriers in women's and children's repression prevention tribunals and proposing solutions. The event was chaired by BRAC executive director Asif Saleh and attended by various dignitaries, including Law and Justice Division secretary Liaquet Ali Molla and other prominent legal figures. Former District and Sessions Judge Umme Kulsum presented the research as a consultant.
