Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will present Bangladesh's new outlook and future vision before world leaders during his address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York later this month, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir said today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the prime minister is scheduled to leave for New York on September 21 and will stay there until September 26, engaging in a busy program that includes his UNGA address and meetings with world leaders. Kobir emphasized that the prime minister will highlight Bangladesh's democratic transformation and the recent election that was conducted freely and fairly.
The address will also showcase the prime minister's thoughts and vision for the future of Bangladesh, as well as how the country intends to play a significant and positive role in global peace, sustainable solutions, and resolving various crises. Domestic priorities such as poverty eradication, economic rejuvenation, and leadership in climate action, particularly climate finance, are set to feature prominently in the prime minister's address.
Kobir noted that the Rohingya crisis would remain a major focus during the visit, with plans for a high-level discussion and a side event dedicated to the issue. Bangladesh aims to maintain the urgency of the crisis on the international community's agenda through these efforts.
Regarding potential bilateral meetings, including one with US President Donald Trump, Kobir stated that such meetings on the sidelines of international conferences are often confirmed at the last moment. The primary focus of the prime minister's visit is to address the United Nations General Assembly, with additional bilateral and multilateral discussions anticipated during the gathering. Details of confirmed meetings will be announced as they are finalized.
