New York:Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih convened a high-level meeting to address the ongoing Rohingya crisis, focusing on sustainable solutions and the safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriation of displaced Rohingya to Myanmar.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the discussions took place at the Prime Minister's residence in the Hyatt Grand Central New York hotel. Both leaders emphasized the creation of a favorable environment for the return of Rohingyas and highlighted the necessity of an effective and coordinated international response to resolve the crisis.
Prime Minister Rahman noted Bangladesh's long-standing humanitarian commitment to hosting a significant number of Rohingyas. He reiterated that their safe and dignified return to Myanmar is essential for a lasting resolution. He urged the international community to enhance their efforts to facilitate this process.
The discussions also underscored the importance of continuing humanitarian aid for the Rohingyas and strengthening global cooperation to accelerate their repatriation. Barham Salih acknowledged Bangladesh's vital humanitarian role and stressed the need for ongoing international collaboration to achieve a sustainable solution.
The meeting was part of the Prime Minister's visit to New York to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, where the Rohingya crisis remains a key agenda item. Prime Minister Rahman is also scheduled to participate in a high-level side event on the crisis, urging renewed global efforts for a durable solution.
