Dhaka: Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir highlighted today that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is fostering aspirations for social transformation in post-July Bangladesh. He emphasized the Prime Minister's efforts in instigating a shift in behavioral culture aimed at constructing a new, non-communal nation.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Minister Fakhrul made these observations while serving as the chief guest at a publication unveiling ceremony, photography exhibition, and discussion held at the DFP Auditorium in honor of July Martyrs' Day 2026. He mentioned that the Prime Minister has been proactive in urging citizens to maintain cleanliness and has instructed city corporations to work towards a cleaner environment.
Mirza Fakhrul, who also holds the position of BNP Secretary General, noted that the Prime Minister is particularly focused on inspiring change among the youth. He expressed concerns over the lack of visible progress in realizing the aspirations of the July Uprising over the past five months, despite the Prime Minister's endeavors.
The minister criticized those who previously engaged in corrupt practices, highlighting a shift in their behavior due to the July changes initiated by the Prime Minister. He lamented the persistence of such cultures and emphasized the need for change to truly advance the nation.
Fakhrul reflected on the historical struggles since 1947, acknowledging the sacrifices made by countless individuals in the pursuit of an equitable society. He recounted the division of Pakistan and the leadership of figures like Maulana Bhashani and AK Fazlul Haque, noting that societal change remained elusive even after the 1971 liberation and the ousting of a fascist ruler in 2024.
He called for a transformation in consumerist behavior to honor the spirit of the July movement and recognized the unique challenges associated with positions of power. Fakhrul urged for a reevaluation of the societal structures to prevent the sacrifice of lives from being in vain.
Furthermore, Fakhrul paid tribute to the late Begum Khaleda Zia, acknowledging her role as a pioneering female freedom fighter and her relentless dedication to the people. He recounted her resilience and her call for a society free from revenge, even amidst personal adversities.
The event, chaired by Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon, saw attendance from various dignitaries, including State Minister for Information Yasser Khan Choudhury and PSC member Dr. Chowdhury Saima Ferdous. Guests at the event also participated in the unveiling of a publication related to July Martyrs' Day and visited a photography exhibition.
