Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday directed the authorities concerned to ensure that sacrificial waste generated during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha is removed within 12 hours, aiming to maintain public health and hygiene across the country. The directive came during a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Secretariat with officials concerned about Eid-ul-Azha management.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed briefed reporters after the meeting, stating that the Prime Minister issued strict instructions to all city corporations, municipalities, district administration, and relevant authorities to complete the cleaning of sacrificial waste within 12 hours of the slaughter. ‘Waste management after Qurbani is one of the most important issues. The Prime Minister has ordered that all areas under city corporations, municipalities, and district administration must ensure complete waste removal within 12 hours,’ he said.
The minister announced a coordination meeting would be held soon with local government officials, city corporation administrators, mayors, and deputy commissioners across the country to implement the directive effectively. ‘We want to demonstrate to the people that the Prime Minister’s instructions will be followed in letter and spirit. Waste will be removed within 12 hours, and all necessary hygiene measures will be ensured to protect public health,’ he added.
Salahuddin also highlighted government initiatives to address the preservation of raw hides collected by madrasahs, orphanages, and other religious institutions, which often face difficulties at district and upazila levels during Eid. The Prime Minister instructed the ministries of commerce and industries, along with the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation, to take preservation measures seriously. ‘As part of the initiative, training and awareness programmes will be conducted at district and upazila levels, while salt will be distributed free of cost for hide preservation,’ the minister said.
He further mentioned that the Prime Minister has already approved the necessary budget to prevent hides from being damaged. To reduce pressure on the Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP), raw hides would be transported to Dhaka in phases instead of all at once, with a restriction aimed at preventing an immediate influx for seven days. Muslims in Bangladesh are scheduled to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha, the second-largest religious festival in Islam, on May 28 this year, subject to the appearance of the moon.
