Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today launched the ‘Bishwa Canal’ re-excavation works in the district as part of the nationwide river and canal re-excavation programme aimed at protecting the environment and strengthening climate resilience. The premier inaugurated the re-excavation of ‘Bishwa Canal’, by cutting soil with a spade, adjacent to Ghosher Hat in Kumarduli village of Shah Mahmudpur Union of Chandpur Sadar Upazila around 4:30 pm. Later, he planted a Neem sapling on the bank of the canal.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Bishwa Canal runs from the Dakatia River to the southern border of Matlab via Ghosher Hat. The inaugural ceremony highlighted long-term plans to conserve water bodies, maintain normal water flow and combat the adverse effects of climate change.
Earlier, the Prime Minister inaugurated the re-excavation work of the Khordda canal around 2:40 pm in the Waruk Bazar area of Tamta Dakshin Union in Shahrasti Upazila in the district and addressed a public rally there.
