Rajshahi: Persons with disabilities deserve equal rights in family and society, stated Mahfuzur Rahman Riton, the Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Administrator. All concerned government and non-government organisations should collaborate to ensure the legitimate rights of individuals with disabilities.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Riton made these remarks as the chief guest at a workshop themed "Equal Rights of Persons with Disabilities: The Core Commitment to Building an Equitable Bangladesh." The event took place in the conference room of a local restaurant, organised by the National Council of Women with Disabilities and supported by Sightsavers and the Equality Bangladesh Campaign.
Riton highlighted that persons with disabilities are integral members of the family and society who possess rightful claims in all aspects. He emphasized the necessity of firmly establishing their rights, stating, "We are working towards that goal."
He further noted that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is making efforts to advance the country, including arranging a loan of Taka 10,000 crore for small entrepreneurs to generate employment and improve living standards. Riton expressed his commitment to support this cause.
The workshop was presided over by Nasima Akter, President of the National Council of Women with Disabilities. Sajeda Akter, General Secretary of the National Council of Women with Disabilities, and Asaduzzaman Chowdhury Russell, President of the Rajanigandha Disability Development Organisation, delivered the welcome address. Marufa Yasmin Monika, a member of the National Council of Women with Disabilities, presented the overall information and presentation of the workshop. Various disability organisations participated in the event.
