Dhaka: BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury emphasized the necessity of restoring the people’s right to vote as a means to re-establish democracy in the country. He stressed that this reform is of utmost importance in the current political climate.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Khasru made these remarks while serving as the chief guest at a book launching ceremony held at the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) auditorium. The book, titled ‘Guideline Recommendations for Building an Advanced Nation of the Future,’ is authored by Mohammad Fayez Uddin.

The seasoned BNP leader expressed concerns over the current government’s legitimacy, stating, ‘Those who came to power through an electoral farce suppress not only the opposition but also the country’s civil society.’ He further insisted on the necessity of forming a neutral and popularly elected government to ensure the independence of state institutions.

Khasru articulated the BNP’s vision for a political landscape characterized by tolerance and freedom of expression. He underscored the need for respectful discourse as a foundation for democracy, emphasizing that the future of the state is contingent upon a transformation in political culture.

Highlighting the consequences of the current governance, Khasru noted, ‘No state institution has been functioning properly for the last 14 months due to the presence of an unelected government. When a government is not elected by the people’s vote, every state institution loses its independence and accountability.’

He concluded by stressing the importance of the rule of law and an efficient administrative structure in governance. Khasru called for the police administration to serve the people, viewing them as partners rather than subordinates. He urged the formation of an elected government to restore accountability and free both the administration and judiciary from political influence.
