Dhaka: BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman emphasized that Bangladesh must prioritize the rights of its people to avoid becoming a subservient state. He stated this during a virtual address at a rally organized by Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office on the occasion of May Day.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Tarique Rahman underscored that the interests of the countrymen should take precedence over those of foreign nations like Myanmar or India. He highlighted the need for a safe, democratic, and discrimination-free Bangladesh to fulfill the aspirations of the people.

At the rally, various BNP leaders, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee members, addressed the gathering. Tarique Rahman criticized the Awami League government for keeping the nation under subjugation for the past one and a half decades, asserting that political democratic rights have not been fully established.

Tarique Rahman reiterated BNP’s support for the interim government in establishing a democratic system and warned against the possibility of a ‘fugitive dictator’ rising again. He called for both reforms and elections, urging the interim government to present clear reform proposals and an electoral roadmap to remove public doubts.

He appealed to the Yunus government to focus on necessary reforms and prepare institutions like law enforcement and the judiciary for upcoming elections. Rahman also affirmed BNP’s commitment to securing people’s rights, citing the party’s record of leadership without the need for its members to flee the country.

The rally witnessed significant participation, with the road in front of the BNP central office filled with attendees. The event began with a musical performance by the pro-BNP cultural wing JASAS, attracting crowds from Fakirapool to Kakrail intersection.
