Jashore: National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam today declared that the citizens of the country will not permit a general election to proceed without necessary reforms and trials concerning the crimes committed during the July-August mass uprising period.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Nahid emphasized that those planning to hold elections without addressing the need for reform and justice are only looking to delay the electoral process. Speaking at a rally in the Jashore Khejur Chattar area, as part of the NCP's street march, he stressed the commitment of young leaders from the mass uprising to secure election and voting rights.
Nahid further articulated the NCP's vision to establish politics rooted in justice, countering corruption and discrimination. He expressed a desire to create a state characterized by responsibility and fairness, where all citizens, regardless of gender, caste, or creed, have their rights acknowledged and respected. The aim, he noted, is to champion justice and righteousness while opposing corruption.
He also criticized the politicization of Bangladesh's constitutional institutions over the last 54 years, asserting that such practices should no longer continue. Nahid called for these institutions, including the police and bureaucracy, to serve the people rather than any political entity. He pointed out that the Election Commission, in particular, has become the most politicized and weakened institution over the past 16 years, failing to safeguard the people's voting rights.
Nahid concluded by emphasizing the necessity to empower the Election Commission to facilitate free, fair, and credible elections. He also announced a forthcoming major movement aimed at combating corruption and extortion, reiterating the NCP's commitment to standing against corrupt practices.
