Dhaka:The parliamentary committee on government undertakings has called for enhanced transparency and accountability in the financial management of the nation's three major seaports. The focus is on addressing longstanding audit objections and preventing the misuse of public funds.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the recommendations were made during the committee's fifth meeting, chaired by Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni, at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. The meeting reviewed the financial and operational activities, as well as audit reports, for the Chattogram, Mongla, and Payra port authorities.

Emphasizing the need for operational efficiency, the committee urged the prevention of public money wastage and called for steps to ensure the accountability of the relevant authorities. Security issues at Chattogram Port were also discussed, referencing a recent report about missing containers and the associated risks to port security.

The committee stressed the importance of expediting the disposal of auctionable containers and vehicles that have been at the port for extended periods. It emphasized improving coordination between Customs authorities and port management, along with resolving existing complications.

Further discussions included strengthening digital management systems and enhancing transparency in port operations. The committee highlighted the need for dredging activities and project implementations at Mongla and Payra ports to achieve their intended objectives and ensure proper use of public funds.

The meeting concluded with recommendations to identify and take action against those responsible for irregularities or financial losses in project implementation. It also addressed the recovery of matured fixed deposits by the Chattogram Port Authority and clearing longstanding audit objections at all three ports. The committee underlined the necessity for effective steps to protect public funds, ensure proper planning in project implementation, and strengthen accountability in financial management.
