Dhaka: Parliament on Sunday passed a bill setting the maximum age limit at 32 years for direct recruitment to government jobs and various public sector bodies. This marks the first bill passed by the 13th Parliament.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the bill titled ‘Maximum Age Limit for Direct Appointment in Government, Autonomous, Statutory Government Authorities, Public Non-Financial Corporations and Self-Governing Bodies Act, 2026’ was introduced by State Minister for Public Administration Md Abdul Bari. The legislation recognizes the demand for raising the age limit for entry into government service and extends the age limit for direct appointments by two years to 32 years.
Previously, several appointment rules had set the age limit for government service entry at 33, 35, 40, and 45 years. With the enactment of this ordinance, the age limit has been standardized to 32 years across all cases. The bill also highlights that by increasing the age limit for direct government job appointments, there will be more opportunities for job seekers. This change aims to enable educated unemployed youth to contribute to national development and address the unemployment issue in the country.
The bill further states that increasing the age limit will positively impact the labor market and the economy. The Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC), a constitutional body, is currently conducting the recruitment process by issuing a circular with the maximum age limit of 32 years for direct recruitment to the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS). Consequently, it was deemed necessary to formalize the ordinance into law, as stated by the minister.
The minister emphasized the importance of turning the ordinance into law, which subsequently led to the bill being passed by a voice vote in Parliament.
