Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus emphasized that Pahela Baishakh is a symbol of "our harmony" as he extended greetings to the nation on the eve of the Bengali New Year. Addressing a Sampriti assembly after laying the foundation stone of the Sampriti Bhaban at the International Buddhist Monastery, Prof Yunus highlighted the inclusive nature of the celebration, which allows individuals to partake in the festivities according to their customs.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Prof Yunus reiterated that despite the varied beliefs, religions, and customs, the citizens of the country are united as one family. He acknowledged the diverse languages, cultures, and traditions of the country's people, including Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, and various communities from the hills and plains.
The event saw participation from notable figures such as Religious Affairs Adviser Dr. AFM Khalid Hossain, Chattogram Hill Tracts Affairs Adviser Supradip Chakma, Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman, and others. The Bangladesh Buddhist Federation organized the program, presided over by Venerable Dharmapriya Mahathera, the Deputy Chief Patriarch of the Bangladesh Buddhist Sangha Council.
Prof Yunus, speaking as the chief guest, underscored the historical significance of Buddhist monasteries as educational institutions and symbols of tradition and civilization. He emphasized the role of these monasteries in disseminating the messages of peace and harmony associated with the teachings of Gautama Buddha.
Highlighting the legacy of Atish Dipankar, a prominent Buddhist scholar from the region, Prof Yunus mentioned his contributions in spreading the teachings of the Great Buddha to Tibet and his esteemed reputation in China. He stressed the importance of the teachings, institutions, traditions, and scholars of Buddhism in the broader context of human civilization.
The chief adviser praised the International Buddhist Monastery as a beacon of communal harmony in Bangladesh, citing its contributions to national interests and public welfare programs. He expressed optimism that the newly initiated Sampriti Bhaban would further promote the heritage of harmony and humanity both domestically and internationally.
Prof Yunus concluded with reflections on his recent visit to China, where he underscored the significance of Atish Dipankar in bilateral discussions, acknowledging the high regard in which Dipankar is held by the Chinese people.
