Dhaka: Water Resources Minister Md Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee today emphasized the significance of the Padma Barrage and Teesta Master Plan in the government's efforts towards building a new Bangladesh. Speaking as the chief guest at the 'Fresher's Orientation-26' event at North South University (NSU), Anee highlighted these projects as crucial undertakings for the nation's development.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister outlined the government's determination to fulfill its election promises despite challenging circumstances. He emphasized the ministry's focus on advancing the canal excavation programme initiated by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, which aims to excavate 20,000 kilometres of canals nationwide. This programme is designed to bolster agricultural activities, protect the environment, improve inland water transport, and preserve the ecosystem, with retaining surface water being a primary goal.
Minister Anee urged students to engage with environmental and water resource studies to apply their knowledge practically. He also acknowledged the pivotal role of Begum Khaleda Zia in founding Bangladesh's first private university in 1993 and the significant contributions of NSU students to the July Mass Uprising in 2024.
Highlighting the role of education, the minister cautioned against pursuing education solely for employment, stressing its application for societal benefit. Recalling his prison experience, he expressed surprise at the detention of five NSU trustees and criticized the government for targeting academics.
Anee also addressed technological advancements, advocating for increased reliance on technology and artificial intelligence to meet modern demands. He stressed the importance of social media as a platform for discussion, while cautioning against inappropriate content.
Concluding his address, the minister reiterated the government's commitment to merit-based employment opportunities. The event was chaired by NSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, with over 1000 new students in attendance. Other speakers included members of the university's Board of Trustees and former chairman M. A. Kashem, Benazir Ahmed, and Professor Dipak Kumar Mitra.
