Dhaka: Over 50,000 people thronged the banks of the river to watch the 100-year-old traditional Nouka Baich competition in the Kamarer Char union within the sadar upazila of Sherpur district.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event drew a large number of enthusiastic attendees, including both men and women, creating an overcrowded scene along the riverbanks. The President of the Sherpur district unit of Jubo Dal, Md. Shafiqul Islam Masud, was present as the chief guest at the competition.
Joint conveners of the Sherpur district unit of BNP, Md Abu Rayhan Rupan and Kamrul Hasan, were also in attendance. Local leaders from BNP remarked on the rarity of such boat race competitions in recent times. They praised the organizers for preserving this cultural tradition and encouraged the continuation of such events that are integral to Bangladeshi heritage.
Boat races have been a significant part of Bangladesh’s riverine culture, with various regions across the country hosting these events annually. The tradition highlights the historical connection between the rivers and the multifaceted Bengali culture.
