Dhaka:State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam announced today that Osmani Udyan will reopen to the public on October 19.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, this decision follows a recent civic gathering attended by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The historic park has been closed for ten years and will now be formally inaugurated by the Prime Minister. The renovation, costing Taka 50 crore, was undertaken by the South City Corporation and includes the newly constructed 'July Memorial.'
During a preparatory meeting at the Bangladesh Secretariat, the State Minister highlighted the features of the renovated park, which now includes walking paths, family-friendly facilities, restaurants, a modern library, designated play areas for children, and artificial fountains. The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) is working diligently to maintain the park's environment and enhance its beauty.
The 'July Memorial' aims to honor the martyrs and fighters of the July uprising, providing visitors a place to reflect on the historic student-led mass revolution and sacrifices made during July-August.
Addressing the issue of hawkers on city footpaths, the State Minister clarified that the initiative is not about 'hawker eviction' but ensuring accessibility for citizens. The aim is to allow residents of both the north and south city corporations to move freely, with ongoing efforts to clear and prevent new hawkers from occupying these spaces.
The preparatory meeting was attended by DSCC Administrator Md. Abdus Salam, the Secretary of the Local Government Division, and other senior officials and representatives from relevant agencies.
