Sylhet: Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) today called upon all not to take law into their own hands, warning of tougher actions against organized mobs. 'No organized mob (violence) will be tolerated in the future. Strict action will be taken against anyone who takes law into their own hands,' he said while speaking to newsmen after visiting the Airport Police Station in Sylhet this afternoon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Home Adviser has requested everyone to take a strong stance against mob violence. He mentioned that delays in police action sometimes occur due to a shortage of vehicles and necessary facilities. 'As you know, many police stations and vehicles were burnt on August 5. And we have not been able to provide them with new vehicles yet,' he stated. He emphasized that while public expectations of the police are high, there are limitations that need to be considered.
Efforts are underway to remedy this shortage by acquiring old vehicles from various places and purchasing new ones. Despite these challenges, the police have become more active and efficient. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury expressed optimism about further improvements in the law and order situation. He also highlighted the need to enhance infrastructure and facilities at police stations to meet the expectations of the public.
The Home Adviser noted significant improvements in law and order, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan. Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md. Rezaul Karim, Sylhet Range DIG Md. Mushfequr Rahman, and senior officials were present during the visit. Following his visit to the Airport Police Station, the Home Adviser also visited Shantiganj Police Station in Sunamganj.
In response to questions from journalists, he acknowledged that crimes can occur but stressed the importance of law enforcement agencies taking legal action. 'The law enforcement agencies have been instructed to be vigilant so that no group can create an organized mob in the future and terrorists and criminals cannot commit crimes,' he said. He urged the media to present objective news, stating that objective information would help maintain calmness in the country and benefit the nation and its people.
