Sylhet: A Sylhet court sentenced a man to death and four others to life imprisonment in connection with a murder case in Gopalganj upazila of the district in 2021. Sylhet Additional Sessions Judge Mahmudul Hasan announced the verdict, bringing closure to the high-profile case.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the individual sentenced to death was identified as Wahidur Rahman Sunny, son of Mahbubur Rahman from Hajipur village in Golapganj upazila. The four individuals who received life sentences are Sarwar Hossain from Kayastagram (Kusumbagh) village, and Shakil Ahmed, Fahim Islam, and Raihan Ahmed, all from Bahara (Dubag) village under Bishwanath Police Station.
Additionally, the court imposed a fine of Tk 20,000 on each of the life-term convicts. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional three years of imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, the convicts attacked and repeatedly stabbed businessman Ehteshamul Haque Shahin in the early hours of March 21, 2021. Ehteshamul was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical Hospital where he was declared dead by the on-duty doctor.
Following the incident, Ehteshamul’s younger brother, Iftekharul Haque Sabuj, filed a case with Golapganj Model Police Station on March 23. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-9) subsequently arrested four suspects on May 2 of that year.
