Sherpur: Maulana Rezaul Karim, the general secretary of Sribardi Upazila Jammat-e-Islami, succumbed to injuries last night following a violent clash between Jammat-e-Islami supporters and BNP activists during an election manifesto programme in the Sherpur-3 (Sribardi-Jhenaigati) constituency. The incident, which stemmed from a disagreement over seating arrangements on the platform, escalated into a deadly confrontation.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the clash resulted in critical injuries to Rezaul Karim and approximately 50 other Jamaat activists and supporters. The violence erupted in the afternoon and led to Rezaul Karim being transported to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) around 10 pm, where he was declared deceased. Rezaul Karim, an Arabic lecturer at Fatehpur Fazil Madrasa, hailed from the Chaulia area of Garjaripa union under Sribardi upazila.
Officer-in-Charge of Jhenaigati Police Station, Nazmul Hasan, reported that the altercation arose due to a disagreement regarding the seating arrangement on the platform. Hospital sources indicated that along with Rezaul Karim, Aminul Islam and Maulana Tahirul Islam were also referred to MMCH. Maulana Tahirul Islam was subsequently sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
The death of Rezaul Karim has led to a tense atmosphere in the area. Sherpur Superintendent of Police Md Kamrul Islam stated that law enforcement personnel were dispatched to the scene promptly to restore order and prevent further violence. Additional law enforcers have been deployed to the area to ensure peace and stability.
