Jashore: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested an alleged smuggler with 450 grams of gold worth about Taka 61 lakh from Muradgarh Bazar in Churamonkati of Sadar upazila early today. The arrestee is Zahid Mandol, 36, son of Hannan Mandal, a resident of Doppara village under Baliakandi Police Station in Rajbari district.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Commander of BGB-49 Battalion Lt. Col. Saifullah Siddiqui stated that Zahid was on his way to the Benapole border with the intention of smuggling the gold to India. This attempt was intercepted by the border guards around 5:30 am.
During initial interrogation, Zahid admitted to collecting the gold from a smuggler in Dhaka’s Dholaipar area. His plan was to transport the gold to India through the Benapole border.
The BGB commander further mentioned that a case has been filed with Jashore Kotwali Police Station concerning the incident. Zahid Mall has been handed over to the police for further investigation and legal proceedings.
