Chattogram: Raozan police of the district arrested a life-time convicted fugitive after 30 years from his home at Sammaholder Para village of Noapara union under the upazila on Sunday night. The arrestee fugitive, Abu Taher, is the son of Syed Ahmed of Sammohaldar Para under the upazila. He was sentenced to life term imprisonment by a court here for killing Emdadul Haque alias Khokan of Kachukayin village of the upazila on April 27, 1996.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a group of miscreants shot dead Emdadul entering his home at about 10 am on April 27, 1996, allegedly over political rivalry and fled the scene safely. The victim’s mother, Halima Begum, filed a case with Raozan police against 15 persons including Taher for killing her son. Raozan police submitted a charge sheet to the court on February 4, 1997.
A Chattogram court convicted Abu Taher with life-term rigorous imprisonment in absentia and fined him TK one lakh, in default to suffer four more years of rigorous imprisonment. Police said Taher was a listed top terrorist of Raozan and had been in hiding after the killing. He managed to flee the country and returned home after August 5, 2024.
Recently, he has again been involved in various criminal activities in violence-prone Raozan upazila. The detainee Taher was placed before the court for further legal action.
