Accra:Bangladesh Secretariat Prime Minister's Information and Broadcasting Adviser, Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, has stated that there is no possibility of reconciliation with the banned Awami League (AL). He attributed this stance to the AL's lack of apology for past genocide and crimes against humanity, as well as their ongoing involvement in terrorist activities and attempts to create instability within the country.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Zahed made these remarks during a weekly press briefing at the Press Information Department (PID). He highlighted incidents of harassment against Dr. Muhammad Yunus by AL supporters abroad, specifically mentioning an incident at New York's JFK Airport. Dr. Zahed criticized the AL for not expressing remorse for mass killings and for continuing to harass Dr. Yunus and other officials.
In response to questions about Dr. Yunus's security at the airport, Dr. Zahed said that any potential lapses by the Bangladesh Embassy in New York would be thoroughly investigated. He noted that legal actions have been initiated against those who harassed actress Badhon and assured similar measures for Dr. Yunus's case.
Dr. Zahed warned AL supporters abroad against further harassment, stating such actions will not go unchallenged. He dismissed the notion of reconciliation with AL, even if some members were to apologize, citing the party's history of misdeeds and inciting unrest.
Regarding Sheikh Hasina's repatriation from India, Dr. Zahed mentioned that the government is working through legal channels to bring her back for justice. He clarified that while the government would accept her voluntary return, she would still have to face judicial proceedings for her alleged crimes.
Additionally, Dr. Zahed discussed efforts to reform the Bangladesh Press Council Act to curb unethical journalism while preserving press freedom. The briefing was attended by Joint Secretary Dr. Md Alam Mustafa and Senior Deputy Principal Information Officer Most. Mobassera Kadery.
