Dhaka: Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam on Saturday emphasized that the government cannot sustain itself without strengthening local government bodies, highlighting the current administration's primary goal of empowering grassroots institutions.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Salam stressed the importance of empowering local government representatives at the village and Union Parishad levels to restore discipline in villages and unions. His remarks came as he spoke as the chief guest at a discussion titled 'The role of UP chairmen and members in building a new Bangladesh by strengthening local government,' organized by the Bangladesh Union Parishad Chairman-Member Association at the National Press Club in the capital.
Salam described the Union Parishad as the administrative core of the country, asserting that empowered Union Parishads lead to the development of self-reliant villages. He compared Tarique Rahman and the late President Ziaur Rahman, noting that both were entrusted with power during fragile economic periods.
Addressing the macroeconomic challenges faced by the country, Salam pointed to the fragile state of the economy and the lack of significant progress in the power and energy sectors due to existing conditions inherited from the previous regime. He urged citizens to cooperate with the current government, specifically with Tarique Rahman's administration, as they work to resolve issues related to electricity and gas.
Salam called for public patience and support, urging people to extend their full cooperation to overcome these challenges. Concluding his speech, he reiterated the need for unity and collaboration with the government. The event also featured speeches by other notable figures, including BNP Chairman's Adviser Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal.
