Dhaka Metropolitan Police have banned carrying and using all sorts of fireworks and low explosives in the capital during Shab-e-Barat, one of the most sacred nights in the Islamic calendar.

The 12-hour restriction will come into effect from 6pm Tuesday and remain in force till 6am the next day, DMP Commissioner Khandker Gulam Faruk said.

The ban was imposed to maintain the law and order in the capital and protect the sanctity of Shab-e-Barat, and ensure fair and peaceful observance of the holy night, he added.

Shab-e-Barat or Nisf Sha'ban will be observed across the country on the night of March 7. It is observed on the 15th night of Sha'ban, an important Arabic month in preparation for Ramadan.

Muslims observe the night offering extra naffal prayers, reciting the Holy Quran, and taking part in other religious rituals.
