Dhaka: Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman announced today that there have been no incidents of enforced disappearance since the current government assumed office. Speaking as the chief guest at the closing ceremony of a three-day workshop on public interest litigation (PIL) at a local hotel, he emphasized that there has not been a single false case filed by police in the last nine months.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Attorney General highlighted the previous prevalence of enforced disappearance in the country over the years. He remarked that this has changed significantly under the present government. The Attorney General also mentioned that around 4,500 individuals had been victims of extrajudicial killings in recent years. He criticized certain NGOs and personalities for their sporadic advocacy on the issue, questioning the level of commitment required to change the societal landscape.
Furthermore, he referenced statistics from the BNP, suggesting that approximately six million fake cases were filed, with 99 percent attributed to police actions. The event, presided over by High Court Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah, also featured speeches from Justice Aynun Nahar Siddiqua, Association for Land Reform and Development (ALRD) executive director Shamsul Huda, and Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) acting chief executive Taslima Islam, among others.
