Dhaka: The Election Commission’s national identity (NID) registration wing has announced that their data centre is entirely secured, with regular surveillance measures in place to prevent any potential data leaks or damage. This statement was made by the director general of the NID registration wing, ASM Humayun Kabir, during a press briefing.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Kabir assured that all necessary steps have been taken to ensure the security of the data centre. He emphasized that routine surveillance processes are actively being conducted to safeguard against any data breaches or damages. Kabir also mentioned that, apart from necessary temporary shutdowns for maintenance, the data centre operates continuously and is regularly checked by in-house personnel to address any issues and update the system.

A team from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) has been engaged to provide full-time security for the data centre. Kabir noted that the project team, technical staff, and himself are consistently involved in enhancing their understanding of the security measures in collaboration with the BUET team. He expressed confidence in the security of the data centre, stating, “Remaining involved in this process, I feel we are secured.”

In addressing previous challenges, Kabir revealed that the centre had identified 586 individuals with dual NIDs, which initially restricted their access to civic services. These individuals have since been relieved by allowing access to their first NID to receive services as Bangladeshi citizens. The NID server currently holds information on 12 crore voters in the country. With the approval of the Election Commission, the wing is in agreements with 186 organizations for information verification.
