Dhaka: Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has announced that the next parliamentary elections might occur by December next year or by March 2026. This statement was made during a press briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy this evening.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Alam explained that Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and several other advisers have frequently discussed the timing of the elections. Alam highlighted that if political parties agree to implement minimum reforms, elections could be held by December of this year. However, if the political parties prefer the current administration to remain for a while longer, elections would then take place in the first half of 2026.

Alam also pointed out logistical challenges, mentioning that the Kalbaisakhi storm season begins in April, followed by the monsoon in June. These weather conditions make April, May, and June unsuitable for conducting elections, which is why December or March next year are being considered as potential timeframes for the elections.

The press briefing was also attended by other officials, including Chief Adviser’s Senior Assistant Press Secretary Foyez Ahammad and Assistant Press Secretary Suchismita Tithi.
