Thakurgaon: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today stated that the forthcoming general elections will serve as an opportunity to ensure justice for the genocides that occurred in July-August and to reject those complicit in the atrocities committed during the 1971 liberation war. “The upcoming polls will be an election to ensure justice for the August 5 genocide and to boycott the accomplices of the 1971 genocide,” he emphasized.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mirza Fakhrul made these remarks while addressing a gathering as the chief guest at Daulatpur Girls’ High School ground in Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila. He highlighted that two significant genocides took place in the country’s history-one in 1971 and another during the July-August mass uprising in 2024. He expressed hope for justice for the crimes committed during the August 5 mass uprising and stated the intention to boycott those who assisted the occupying forces in 1971 in the upcoming election.
Additionally, Fakhrul addressed the idea of a referendum, suggesting that if necessary, it should coincide with the election day. He criticized external influences from America and other places, asserting that the BNP is open to changes but prefers decisions to be made through debate in a democratically elected parliament.
He emphasized the importance of the upcoming election for the country’s democracy, noting that people have been deprived of the right to vote for the past 15 years. He also touched upon the economic struggles faced by farmers, particularly the unfair prices for their produce, including potatoes and vegetables in Thakurgaon.
The BNP leader promised that if elected, his party would ensure farmers receive fair prices for their crops and address issues like the fertilizer crisis. He criticized the interim government for its lack of understanding regarding farmers’ problems due to its unelected status and pledged that a BNP government would prioritize resolving these issues and provide agricultural and family cards for fair access to essential goods.
Fakhrul, considering this possibly his last election, urged the public to support ‘paddy sheaf’. The meeting, chaired by Jagannathpur Union BNP President Tofazzal Hossain, was attended by various BNP leaders and people from different walks of life.
