Dhaka: The Nepalese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Ghanshyam Bhandari, met with Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo to discuss mutual interests, particularly focusing on regional climate cooperation.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the dialogue, held at the minister's Secretariat office, revolved around environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, sustainable forest management, and addressing climate change impacts. Ambassador Bhandari expressed his condolences for the loss of lives in Nepal's recent tragic accident, extending sympathies to the affected families. He affirmed Bangladesh's readiness to continue humanitarian support and cooperation during this difficult period.
Minister Mintoo highlighted the interconnectedness of Bangladesh and Nepal's environments and ecosystems, despite facing different climate change challenges. He pointed out that changes in Himalayan glaciers, heavy rainfall, and floods significantly affect South Asia's environment and livelihoods. The minister underscored the need for regional collaboration, knowledge exchange, and joint efforts ahead of the upcoming COP-31 conference to address these shared challenges.
Ambassador Bhandari conveyed Nepal's strong interest in enhancing cooperation with Bangladesh to combat climate change, focusing on capacity building, technology transfer, and mutual support for eco-friendly development projects. He also expressed gratitude to the Bangladesh Prime Minister for her solidarity and assistance following the recent accident in Nepal, describing it as a testament to the deep-rooted friendship and trust between the two nations.
Beyond environmental concerns, the discussions extended to improving bilateral ties in trade, connectivity, tourism, education, and renewable energy. Both sides agreed that bolstering regional connectivity and cooperation in clean and renewable energy is vital for achieving sustainable development across South Asia.
The meeting was also attended by Dr. Fahmida Khanom, Acting Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
