Dhaka: The National Citizen Party (NCP) has raised allegations of a conspiracy to rebrand the Awami League through the Jatiya Party in the lead-up to the forthcoming national election. NCP Convener Nahid Islam addressed a rally at Shahbagh intersection, voicing concerns over the exclusion of the Jatiya Party from key governmental and electoral dialogues post-5 August initiatives.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Nahid noted that the interim government's actions did not include the Jatiya Party in any consultative process. He questioned the basis for their participation in the election, given their absence from the consensus commission and the Election Commission's dialogue. Nahid expressed that the NCP views this as a conspiracy and pledged resistance in the streets.
Nahid reiterated the NCP's demands, including the immediate execution of the tribunal verdict against Sheikh Hasina, trial for the Awami League, and accountability for the Jatiya Party and its allies. He emphasized that the tribunal verdict was a quest for justice, not political retaliation, and urged for diplomatic efforts to bring Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh.
He called on political entities not to undermine the July uprising or the judicial process, warning of the people's unforgiving stance against any betrayal. Nahid also criticized India's role, alleging exploitation and support for the Awami League's authoritarian governance. He urged the Indian government to facilitate Sheikh Hasina's return, citing the extradition treaty.
Nahid appealed to Indian citizens to support Bangladesh's justice demands and avoid harboring those accused of mass crimes. He stressed the importance of continuing trials related to the July-August killings and urged political parties to commit to justice and reform.
The NCP, Nahid stated, remains dedicated to its movement and electoral participation, refusing to compromise on justice and reform. He warned that any political compromise would meet strong opposition from the NCP.
The event was also attended by NCP Member Secretary Akhter Hossain, Senior Joint Convener Ariful Islam Adeeb, Joint Convenor Dr Tasnim Jara, NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, Jatiya Chhatra Shakti President Zahid Ahsan, and General Secretary Abu Bakar Majumdar.
