Dhaka:Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam announced that a 'National Port Strategy' is being developed to support Bangladesh's economic growth and the expansion of international trade.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister emphasized the critical role of Bangladesh's ports in the nation's import-export activities and broader economic functions. Effective strategies and coordination in port management are essential to meet the country's current needs.
The announcement was made during a seminar organized by the Ministry of Shipping at a hotel in the city. The seminar was attended by State Minister for Shipping Md Razib Ahsan, JICA Bangladesh Office's Chief Representative Junko Takahashi, port authority chairmen, and experts from various ministries and universities.
Rabiul stressed that the strategy should not compromise the authority of any agency or ministry but should prioritize national economic interests with input from all stakeholders, including government agencies and business communities.
He noted that an integrated port management strategy was overdue and highlighted the urgency for enhanced port capacities and better coordination among authorities due to the economy's and trade's progress. The government is working towards finalizing the strategy, with collaboration from JICA and experts.
The minister called for vigilance to ensure that the responsibilities of various ministries and agencies do not obstruct coordinated initiatives, advocating for mutual cooperation within existing frameworks.
He explained that ports in Bangladesh are managed by separate authorities and involve multiple entities, including the Ministry of Commerce and the National Board of Revenue. Hence, input from all parties is crucial in formulating the strategy.
Rabiul warned that prioritizing the interests of a single party in the strategy could hinder the desired outcomes.
