Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today reaffirmed the government’s commitment to holding the national parliament election in February next year. He emphasized that the election would occur in a celebratory atmosphere during a meeting with the National Consensus Commission and political parties at the Foreign Service Academy. This meeting precedes the July National Charter 2025 signing ceremony, scheduled for October 17.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Professor Yunus, who also serves as the chairman of the Commission, highlighted the interconnection between the election and the July National Charter, which the Commission has prepared. He stressed the importance of fulfilling the commitments previously announced and vowed to ensure the election’s festive nature. He stated that the government would not compromise on this matter.
The Chief Adviser acknowledged that since political parties collaboratively prepared the July Charter, it is now the government’s responsibility to conduct the election inclusively and festively. He asserted that achieving this would mark the success of their collective efforts. Addressing the political transition, Professor Yunus expressed optimism about progressing towards a satisfactory transition as per the collective decisions from discussions. He emphasized the importance of realizing these joint efforts.
Prominent figures, including BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Advocate Matiur Rahman Akanda, and others, participated in the meeting. The session began with a welcome speech by Commission Vice-President Professor Ali Riaz and was moderated by Monir Haidar, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser.
Professor Yunus expressed his gratitude for being part of the historic process that unified diverse political parties to draft and agree on the July Charter. He described it as a significant achievement not only for Bangladesh but also in the global context of political systems. He thanked all political parties and stakeholders for their dedication and hard work in preparing the charter, emphasizing the remarkable achievement of bringing this initiative to fruition.
The Chief Adviser extended his appreciation to all members of the Consensus Commission, especially Vice-Chairman Professor Ali Riaz, for their relentless efforts in realizing the charter. He remarked that the nation would remember their contributions, and the signing of the July National Charter would be commemorated as a historic event in the country’s history, symbolizing the beginning of new chapters in the reform process.
Professor Yunus announced plans to disseminate the charter’s key points across educational institutions and communities to ensure widespread understanding of its significance. He described the July Charter as a valuable asset and revealed plans to preserve the pens used for signing the charter in a museum. Furthermore, he instructed relevant departments to document the Commission’s proceedings as a national treasure through publications and video documentation.
Concluding his remarks, Professor Yunus thanked everyone involved and announced that the signing ceremony at the South Plaza of the National Parliament on Friday would be a national celebration. He encouraged all to participate in the event, sign the charter with a festive spirit, and share the moment with the entire nation.
