National Fisheries Week Inaugurated in Bagerhat with Focus on Local Fish Conservation

Bagerhat: The National Fisheries Week-2025 was inaugurated today in Bagerhat, marked by enthusiastic participation and a focus on enriching the country with local fish species through the establishment of sanctuaries.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Bagerhat, Ahmed Kamrul Hasan, officially opened the week-long event as the chief guest at a ceremony held at the Bagerhat Sadar Upazila Auditorium at 10 am. The event, organized by the District Fisheries Office, was chaired by the District Fisheries Officer, Dr. Abul Kalam Azad.

During his speech, DC Kamrul Hasan emphasized the need for a coordinated approach among fishermen, fish farmers, and animal resource personnel to advance the fisheries sector in the country. He urged all stakeholders to adhere to existing laws and regulations during fishing activities and stressed the importance of careful production of Renu pona, or fish fry. Additionally, he highlighted the significance of cultivating native fish species over non-native or giant varieties.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by several prominent figures, including former Bagerhat District BNP President MA Salam, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Fakirhat Circle) Md. Rabiul Islam Shamim, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) SM Mostafizur Rahman, Convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement SM Saddam, alongside officials from the Department of Fisheries, local fish farmers, entrepreneurs, and other dignitaries.

The event commenced with a vibrant rally in the upazila town, which was followed by the symbolic release of fish fry into the Upazila Sadar pond. The programme concluded with the distribution of awards to the best fish farmers, acknowledging their significant contributions to the fisheries sector.
