Dhaka: National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam today said Proportional Representation (PR) movement launched by Jamaat-e-Islami is a ‘calculated political deception,’ alleging that it was designed to derail the Consensus Commission’s reform process and divert public attention from the broader goal of constitutional restructuring in line with the people’s uprising.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the NCP Convener criticized the PR movement as a manipulation tactic, asserting that it was intended to sidetrack national dialogue from the primary issue of restructuring the state and constitution. Nahid expressed these views in a Facebook post, emphasizing the movement’s misalignment with the people’s demands.
Nahid underlined that the core reform demand for establishing an Upper House based on PR of votes was meant as a constitutional safeguard. He noted the NCP’s efforts to build a movement around this foundational reform, aiming to establish the legal framework of the July Charter through broad national consensus. However, he accused Jamaat and its allies of hijacking this agenda for their partisan gains.
He further accused Jamaat-e-Islami of never engaging in meaningful reform discourse before or after the July Uprising, lacking any substantive proposals or commitment to a democratic republic. Nahid characterized Jamaat’s sudden endorsement of reform as a tactical infiltration rather than an act of genuine conviction.
Nahid asserted that the people of Bangladesh have now recognized this deception and will no longer be misled by false reformists. He concluded by stating that neither divine authority nor the sovereign people would allow dishonest forces to govern them again.
