Dhaka: State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir today emphasized that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's bilateral visit to India hinges on the existence of a conducive environment and mutual respect between the two countries. "When the environment is favorable and mutual respect is maintained, bilateral visits will take place. There is no need to rush," Kobir stated to journalists at the Foreign Service Academy.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Kobir was responding to media queries following his participation in an international conference titled 'Protracted Rohingya Crisis: The Search for a Comprehensive Approach.' Addressing the possibility of the Prime Minister's visit to India, the state minister highlighted the government's priority on bilateral visits and discussions. He clarified that such a visit should be distinguished from attending multilateral events.
Kobir further addressed questions regarding a BIMSTEC event, underscoring that an invitation to the BIMSTEC chair should not be misinterpreted as a bilateral invitation to the Bangladesh Prime Minister. "First visit cannot be a multilateral one. We are placing greater emphasis on bilateral visits and discussions," he reiterated.
The state minister's comments come amidst heightened media interest surrounding the timing of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's potential visit to India. Kobir conveyed that Dhaka perceives no urgency for such high-level interactions, underscoring the significance of an appropriate atmosphere and mutual respect in bilateral relations.
In response to inquiries about Bangladesh-India trade, Kobir noted that bilateral discussions are progressing positively, although no final decisions or new developments are ready for announcement. "Positive talks are continuing. Decisions don't happen overnight; they take time," he explained.
Regarding the imminent expiration of the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, Kobir assured that the government is committed to addressing every issue concerning Bangladesh's national interest with seriousness and efficiency. "Wherever our national interest is involved, we will act with full gravity and efficiency," he affirmed, emphasizing the government's dedication to protecting the nation's interests and its people's welfare.
Additionally, when questioned about the upcoming United Nations General Assembly and the Prime Minister's foreign travel plans, Kobir mentioned that preparations for the UNGA session and related engagements are in progress. He promised that the Prime Minister's travel itinerary and other final decisions would be officially released before the Bangladesh delegation's departure.
