Dhaka: Land development for the construction of the metro rail line-5 (MRT-5) depot at Hemayetpur has progressed by 59.37 percent as of July. The 37.20 km long MRT-5 project comprises two routes: one from Hemayetpur to Bhatara (northern route) and the other from Gabtoli to Dasherkandi (southern route).
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the northern route of MRT-5 spans 20 kilometers from Hemayetpur to Bhatara and includes nine underground and five overhead stations, divided into 10 packages. This segment features a 6.50 km overhead line from Hemayetpur to Amin Bazar and a 13.50 km underground line from Amin Bazar to Notun Bazar.
The southern route, measuring 17.20 kilometers, consists of a 13.10 km underground line from Gabtoli to Aftab Nagar West and a 4.10 km elevated line from Aftab Nagar Centre to Dasherkandi, with 11 underground and four elevated stations planned. Construction work for MRT-5 commenced on November 4, 2023, and is scheduled for completion in 2030.
The northern route construction involves 10 packages, with the first package allocated for land development at the depot. Civil work and building construction are planned under the second package, while the third package focuses on the construction of stations and the main overhead line from Hemayetpur to Bhatara.
The fourth package addresses the construction of an underground station and the main line from the Aminbazar transition point to Mirpur 1. The fifth package will see the completion of underground stations and the main line from east of Mirpur-1 station to Kachukhet.
Construction of underground stations and the main line from Kachukhet station to the Bhatara transition point falls under package six. Package seven encompasses the design, production, and installation of the railway electrical and mechanical (E and M) system, including signaling, telecommunication, electrification, PSD, and ERMS.
Rolling stock and depot equipment design, manufacturing, and installation will be finalized under package eight. Package nine covers the construction of track work for the depot and main line, with the design, manufacturing, and installation of the automatic fare collection (AFC) system outlined in package ten.
