Foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen today expressed his hope for early Rohingya repatriation following a recent discussion with Chinese side that has been involved in mediating between Bangladesh and Myanmar to resolve the crisis.

"We had a discussion regarding sending (Rohingya) them back (to Myanamr)... we hope they (Rohingya) will return to their homes with dignity," he told reporters while he was approached to make comments on his recent meeting with Chinese special envoy Deng Xijun in Dhaka.

The foreign minister said many are working to help facilitate the Rohingya repatriation but it's not possible to say the date repatriation until it is done.

"We hope, they (Rohingya) will return soon," Momen said after attending a programme marking the Foreign Service Day at Foreign Service Academy in the capital.

Momen said the Chinese side has been continuing its efforts to facilitate the discussion between Bangladesh and Myanmar.

"I should say they (China) have taken a very good initiative and they are working accordingly," said the foreign minister.

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen is currently visiting China and is scheduled to return home on Wednesday.

Since August 25 in 2017, Bangladesh has been hosting over 1.1 million forcefully displaced Rohingyas in Cox's Bazar district and most of them arrived there after a military crackdown by Myanmar, which the UN called a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing" and other rights groups dubbed it as "genocide".

In the last five and half years, not a single Rohingya went back home.

Myanmar agreed to take them back, but repatriation attempts failed twice due to trust deficit among the Rohingyas about their safety and security in Rakhine state
